Step 1. Find two bowls that will stack nicely, creating a balanced shape. I found these two at the hospice for $3 each! Give them a good wash before applying any paint. Go for a slightly smaller base bowl for a more dramatic look.

2. I wanted the inside of the bowl where the fruit sits to be nice and smooth so spray painted this with Rustoleum white. Apply several thin coats to get nice even coverage. Follow this with a clear varnish, I went matt for a low sheen finish, but semi gloss would also work well. Leave these overnight to really dry before painting the outsides of the bowls.

3. Add baking powder to your paint. I literally never measure this! Just stir some through, wait for it to react and give it a go. If you want it more heavily textured add more. You can always do a second coat to really bump it up, but paint it on quite thick. I went over the paint with a sponge to get rid of the brush strokes the paint brush was leaving and am really happy with how this worked to create a really pretty texture.

4. Glue the two bowls together, I used Selley’s liquid nails, but that’s just what we had on hand. Any heavy duty adhesive will work a treat. Boom, you’re done! Now you have a unique textured piece adding interest to what is often a pretty boring homeware item.
