DIY Home

Feeling creative? Looking for ways to add interest to your home on a budget? Here’s your spot for fun and easy DIY projects I’ve incorporated into our home that you can try for yourself!

Rustic rope planter

I know I say this a lot, but this one was so simple it’s not funny. When it comes to a DIY project I like them to be a quick and easy transformation! I’ve had these old wire baskets for years, and wish I’d given them this makeover a long time ago.

This look is perfect if you’re into natural materials, and/or if you (like me) have rustic leanings when it comes to home decor.

Tissue vase - how to hydro dip

This is such a fun and easy way to really give your old vases, glassware or second hand shop finds a real glow up! I have a real thing about how ugly tissue boxes are so wanted to rehome some in my house. Once I’d seen this hydro dipping method on a pair of sneakers I knew I had to give it a go. Now nothing in my home is safe! I’ve already been for another trip to the oppy to grab more vases to makeover.

frame of mind

If you’re anything like me you have beautiful art sitting around just waiting to be framed and hung. Just how you frame that piece can completely change how it looks and feels, and deserves a little more consideration than we usually give it.

If getting your art professionally done isn’t in the budget then I’ve got a couple of little tips and tricks up my sleeve to elevate how you frame it up yourself! Check them out here.

stacked fruit bowl

I’ve hated our fruit bowl for years, it wasn’t just hideous but it bruised fruit meaning it wasn’t even fit for purpose! I’ve been meaning to replace it with something but it just hasn’t been a priority. I was at the op shop looking at some of the offerings there and found two bowls that stacked quite nicely and figured I could turn them into something functional that looked a sight better than the black wrought iron thing we have been using for far too long.

This is a really simple DIY to add texture and interest to your kitchen in just a few easy steps.

Abstract plaster Art

Plaster art is a big trend in home decor right now. You’ve all seen the boho vibe rainbows and minimalist stripes, but the price tag on some of them? Ouch. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for investing in art when it’s a lifetime piece you’ll treasure but I have a feeling this is something you’d buy then say buh bye to in a few years time. Fortunately it’s super simple to create your own masterpiece, not to mention a really fun creative endeavour. I’m much more of an abstract girl myself, the style is flexible and can suit any style of home. tassel lamp

I’ve been on a real roll with lamps lately! If you follow me on Insta you’ll know I nabbed this beautiful lamp base during an op shopping road trip with a good friend. I fell in love with the base on this but the shade was a dated yawn fest. Our youngest little bear has started reading in her room at night and didn’t have a bedside lamp so I wanted to do something fun to jazz this up a little. It’s a bit more boho than my usual style but I’m really happy with how it’s come together.

easy feather lamp

I fell in love with a feather lamp I saw online but it was from a shop in the UK and priced at $300 NZD not including shipping. Not to mention with a plug that wouldn’t fit here and who knows how the feathers would have faired being shipped halfway across the world. So I set about creating my own and it was actually ridiculously simple!

paint your own vase or planter

This is one of my favourite DIY wins. You can use pots and vases that you have laying around the house or hit the op shops and find some gems. All you have to do it look past their current colour and picture them in their new textured glory.

Christmas tree bows

Christmas decorations and ornaments can be incredibly expensive. These bows are not only an affordable way to make your tree beautiful but incredibly simple to make. The lights twinkle through the organza and they add a simple elegance to any tree.

Simply purchase organza from your local fabric store, I got this from Spotlight. Cut into wide strips, approx 30cm. Tie in a large bow. Done. It’s literally that easy!

spraypainting 101

Spray-painting is one of the easiest ways to makeover items in your home. The beauty of it is there’s usually much less prep work and it’s a great solution for materials that aren’t known to be easy to paint - eg. metal like these lockers I nabbed at K-Mart for a steal but didn’t come in a colour that would work.

When it comes to spray-painting I always recommend using Rustoleum products. I’ve tried many brands over the years but find theirs reliably excellent.
